California State PTA’s first membership challenge of the year is due soon!
PTA units that have Membership dues for at least 30 members (through proper channels) into the California State PTA office by October 30 will receive a certificate from California State PTA. No application required! Units remit per capita dues through channels or through the TOTEM electronic membership system for 30 or more members by October 30. Each unit PTA must adhere to the due dates set by their council and/or Tenth District PTSA. Council due date is October 1, and District due date is October 15. If you missed the due dates, send them as soon as possible to allow additional time for them to process and mail checks to the state PTA office. DO NOT SEND REMITTANCES TO THE CALIFORNIA STATE PTA. Memberships submitted through the new on-line system (TOTEM) are forward automatically. |

SACRAMENTO – October has always been a difficult month for wildfires in California, but this year in particular the extreme devastation is felt by numerous communities throughout the state. California State PTA President Dianna MacDonald issued the following statement:
“California State PTA is deeply concerned about everyone impacted by the devastating wildfires affecting Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake Counties as well as those affected by the Canyon Fire 2 in Orange County.
“As a Sonoma County resident, I have seen firsthand the devastation in my own community. My thoughts are with all of those who have been impacted. They are our families, friends, colleagues, volunteers and members and we remain steadfast in our commitment to support them as they rebuild and recover.
“California State PTA urges everyone to donate to the North Bay Fire Relief Fund or the American Red Cross Canyon Fire 2 Relief Fund. Redwood Credit Union is paying for all administrative costs for the North Bay Fire Relief Fund, so 100 percent of your donation will go to relief efforts and directly to aid the victims.
“PTA leaders and members work hard every day to give our children and school communities what they need to thrive. Our mission now becomes that much more important.”

The real responsibility for a new president and board begins on July 1, when most PTA officers take office. There are a number of summer tasks that should take place:
- Check Signing Authority – The incoming officers must visit your bank during the summer to complete new bank authorization signature card. Check in Article VI Section 6 (f) in your bylaws to determine who can and cannot sign checks. Call your bank to see what documentation you will need to bring along.
- Annual Financial Report – The outgoing treasurer is responsible for completing the year-end Annual Financial Report after the close of the fiscal year and before turning the books over to the auditor. A copy of this report is submitted to your district PTA – and your council, if you are in a council PTA – in the fall.
- Year-end audit – The fiscal year-end for most PTAs is June 30. The year-end audit should be completed by the outgoing (2014/2015) unit auditor as soon as possible during the summer months to allow for the treasurer for 2015-16 to get started. A copy of the year-end audit – audit form, checklist andrecommendations/findings – is submitted to your district PTA – and your council, if you are in a council PTA – in the fall.
- 2014-2015 Taxes – Once the 2014-15 audit is completed, the federal and state tax filings can be completed by the outgoing treasurer or a paid tax preparer. Tax filings and the RRF-1 are due on November 15th if the fiscal year ends June 30. Do not fail to ensure these required government filings are completed.
- 2015-16 Budget – The board-elect may have presented a proposed budget to the association in June but if not, they should prepare one during the summer to bring to the first association meeting in the fall for approval.
